‘Three-minute thesis competition’: Eisteddfod research showcase is back again

The skill of describing complex research to the general public will again be tested in our popular ‘Three Minute Thesis’ competition at this year’s Eisteddfod in Y Garreg Las.

The competition, which is co-organised with Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol, challenges early career researchers to explain their research to the public in Welsh and in under three minutes, using only one slide.

It is open to any undergraduate, postgraduate or early career researcher who has completed, or is working on, a project or thesis.

It carries with it a prize of £50 to the winner, and will take place 3.30pm, Thursday 6 August, in the Societies Tent.

This is a fantastic opportunity for early career researchers to develop their public communication skills. The competition is also a great opportunity to learn more about the exciting research produced by Wales’s up-and-coming talent.

Further details about the format of the competition are here.

If you would like to take part in the competition, please drop us an email here. We’ll be delighted to provide more information and useful advice.

Closing date to enter: 12pm, 3 July 2026

This is always a popular and exciting feature of the Eisteddfod. It is a superb way to promote research through the medium of Welsh and to support the next generation of Welsh researchers. It also offers the opportunity to meet with the researchers and our panel of judges and enjoy interesting conversations about research in Wales.

Space in the tent at the event is always at a premium and last year’s competition played to a packed venue. So, if you would like to come and watch researchers compete against each other to present their research in three minutes, reserve your place here now.
