Return to Erasmus: Society Response
The Learned Society of Wales welcomes the announcement of plans for the UK to reassociate with the Erasmus programme from 2027.
We had previously expressed our disappointment when the UK chose not to participate in Erasmus and highlighted the importance of giving students of all ages and backgrounds the opportunity to study in the EU.
The benefits of exchange are evident for staff and students. Equally important are the wider benefits for Wales that come from strengthened international ties.
These help to amplify Wales voice around the world, while the global perspectives that come from working across borders also help boost Wales’ research and knowledge base.
The importance of this was recognised by the Welsh Government when they launched the Taith scheme in 2022. We hope the return to Erasmus will ensure that the close relationship with our European partners continues and strengthens.
