Professor Robin Stowell FLSW Awarded Prize for Music Encyclopedia

Robin Stowell, an Emeritus Professor in the School of Music, Cardiff University and one of the Society’s Fellows has won, along with his co-editor Colin Lawson, the C.B. Oldman prize, 2019, for The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Historical Performance in Music (Cambridge University Press, 2018).

The prize is awarded to an author or joint authors of a work deemed to have made a significant contribution in the area of music bibliography, music reference or music librarianship. Judgement for the award was made by a committee appointed by the International Association of Music Libraries, Archives and Documentation Centres.

The Encyclopedia, which is co-edited with Colin Lawson (Director, Royal College of Music, London), explores issues of performance style, technique and practice, the history and development of musical instruments and the work of performers, scholars, theorists, composers and editors. It features contributions from more than 100 leading experts who provide a geographically varied survey of both theory and practice, as well as evaluation of and opinions on the resolution of problems in period performance.
