Hugh Owen Medal 2024

Professor Gary Beauchamp has received this year’s Hugh Owen Medal from the Learned Society of Wales.

Professor Beauchamp has had a long and distinguished career in education research in Wales. His work is deeply embedded in, and has a positive impact on, children’s education in the country. It highlights learner voice, especially that of primary school children, reflecting its importance in Welsh education policy.

In addition, he has an international research profile, particularly in the use of interactive technologies in learning and teaching. His commitment to building research capacity and collaborating with Early Career Researchers significantly supports the development of the next generation of education researchers.

“I am honoured to receive the Hugh Owen Medal from the Learned Society of Wales. It represents the culmination of the support, challenge and inspiration I have received from many colleagues, both in higher education and education more widely, in Wales and internationally. It also recognises the value in research of listening to learners, of all ages, which has been the focus of much of my work.”

The Hugh Owen Medal is named in honour of Sir Hugh Owen, a Welsh educator, philanthropist, and pioneer of higher education in Wales. It was established to recognise major contributions to educational research.
