Break the Bias: International Women’s Day 2022

Beat The Bias is the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day.

‘Whether deliberate or unconscious, bias makes it difficult for women to move ahead. Knowing that bias exists isn’t enough, action is needed to level the playing field.’

Dr. Louise Bright, one of our Fellows, has spent much of her career promoting women in academia. Here, she reflects on the theme of Beat The Bias as it applies to Higher Education.

The Learned Society of Wales is committed to equality, diversity and inclusion. Over the past year, we focused on gender-balance within the Fellowship. Our Council (board of trustees) was gender-balanced for the first time and we elected our highest ever proportion of women Fellows (38%).

Here we look at those new women Fellows and the breadth and significance of their work.

But there is more we need to do. Last year, we consulted over 140 people on how to make the Society more welcoming and inclusive. That consultation will now shape a forthcoming report that will establish further ambitious EDI targets.
