Events 2012-13
The following public events were organised or supported by the Learned Society of Wales in the Society Year 2012-13:
- ‘Wales and the Space Race’, The Annual Richard Burton Lecture, by George Abbey, former director of the NASA Johnson Space Centre (Richard Burton Centre for the Study of Wales, Swansea University, supported by the Learned Society of Wales) 25 April 2012
- ‘Flatland, a good place to do algebra’, A distinguished lecture in the Frontiers Programme by Sir Vaughan Jones KMNZ FRS FRSNZ, Vanderbilt University, at Cardiff University, 16 April 2013
- ‘Innovation and Energy: hot topics and cold facts’ SWIEET2007Menelaus Lecture, by Sir John Cadogan CBE DSc FRSE FRSC PLSW FRS, 25 March 2013
- Dylan Thomas in Translation: A multilingual live-translation event at Dylan Thomas’ Birthplace, Number 5 Cwmdonkin Drive, Swansea. Organised by School of European Languages, Translation and Politics at Cardiff University, supported by the Learned Society of Wales.
- Bywyd a Gwaith Thomas Charles o’r Bala, organised by University of Wales Trinity Saint David, (Lampeter Campus), supported by the Learned Society of Wales. A conference celebrating the life and work of Thomas Charles of Bala.
- ‘Modelling the evolution of cities and regions: past and present‘ a lecture by Sir Alan Wilson FBA FRS, Professor of Urban and Regional Systems in the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis at University College London and Chair of the Arts and Humanities Research Council, at Swansea University
- More Kicks than Pricks: Modernist Body-parts, a lecture by Professor Maud Ellmann, Distinguished Research Professor in the Department of English at Swansea University, and Randy L. and Melvin R. Berlin Professor of the Development of the Novel in English, at the University of Chicago.
- Drug testing and the Olympics, a lecture by Professor David Cowan, Director of King’s College London’s Drug Control Centre,Kings College London.
- Black Skin, Blue Books: the case for comparing Wales and African America, a lecture by Dr Daniel Williams, Swansea University, marking the publication of his latest monograph, Black Skin, Blue Books: African Americans and Wales, 1845-1945, by University of Wales Press.
- The Changing Face of Higher Education Institutions: Some International Reflections, a lecture given under the Society’s Universities Theme by Professor John Davies, Emeritus Professor, Anglia Ruskin University and Visiting Professor, International Centre for Higher Education Management, on the global experience of restructuring in higher education
- Medievalism in Wales, a two-day conference organised by Professor John Law, College of Arts and Humanities (Department of History), Swansea University, in association with and supported by the Society
- ‘From Newton to Turing: Physics and the Computational Constraint’ Professor Barry Cooper (Leeds University and Chair of the Turing Centenary Group), a Learned Society of Wales Anniversaries lecture as part of the 5th International Workshop on Physics and Computation (PC 2012), 5.30pm 30 August 2012, Swansea University.
- A Frontiers lecture on ‘Mapping the Miracle: Gerard Manley Hopkins’ Pscychocartography of Welsh Space’ by Professor Damian Walford Davies, Aberystwyth Univeristy, Thursday 28 June 2012, 18.30.
- A one day History of Science and Technology symposium ‘Dillwyn Day: Science, Culture, Society’ considering the pivotal role of the Dillwyn dynasty in nineteenth century life, Friday 22 June 2012, 10.00-17.00, National Waterfront Museum Swansea
- A lecture on ‘Information Visualization for Knowledge Discovery’ by Professor Ben Shneiderman, Professor for Computer Science at the Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory at the University of Maryland. 4.00pm Monday 11 June 2012, Taliesin Theatre, Swansea University. For further details see here.
- ‘Language Based Area Studies: Challenges and Perspectives’ A joint event with Cardiff School of European Languages, Translation and Politics (EUROP, Cardiff), the Department of Politics and Cultural Studies (PCUS, Swansea) and the Learned Society of Wales tolaunch the Language Based Area Studies pathway of the Wales ESRC Doctoral Training Centre. - ‘Poetry Under Pressure’. A series of events organsied by Professor Gerrit-Jan Berendse FLSW, Cardiff School of European Languages, Translation and politics exploring German and Welsh language Poetry. Supported by the Learned Society of Wales, iterature Wales, Cardiff School of European Languages, Translation and Politics and the Saxon Academy of Arts. Thursday 24 and Friday 25 May 2012.
