What does being a Fellow mean?
Fellowship of the Learned Society of Wales is distinct from membership of a professional body. As Wales’ National Academy, we are a charity with a Fellowship who have been rigorously selected through a scrutiny process as leaders in their fields with the shared purpose of giving back to Wales.
Our 700 Fellows span all areas of knowledge and include leaders across multiple sectors including academia, industry, public life and the third sector. Their areas of interest span the sciences, humanities, arts and public services.
People want to be Fellows of the Society for a variety of reasons that include:
Contributing to the advancement of knowledge for Wales
Our charitable purpose is to advance knowledge to contribute to scientific, cultural, social, environmental and economic development within Wales and beyond. Fellowship is a collaborative contribution to that charitable purpose and the impact it has.
Recognition by peers
Election is a process that establishes an individual’s excellence within their field. This level of peer recognition is signified with the letters ‘FLSW’ after their name which acknowledges the impact they have.
Sharing expertise
Fellowship offers opportunities to engage with Wales’ decision and policy-makers through research, innovation and knowledge exchange.
Joining a unique community
Fellowship, as a community with a wide range of expertise and experience, brings you together with people you would not normally meet, forming productive and often unexpected partnerships. Fellows come together at a variety of events and activities (both real and virtual) to network and collaborate for the benefit of Wales.
Professional development
Fellowship can lead to access to new opportunities highlighted by LSW or through connections made with other Fellows which lead to professional development opportunities outside of the usual.
