Medals and Awards FAQs

All the information about our Medals and Awards process can be found in the documentation online.  We have highlighted some areas here that may be of interest.

Who can nominate someone?

Anyone over the age of 18 may submit a nomination. Other than that, there are no restrictions on who can submit a nomination.  Organisations may also choose to submit a nomination.

Who can be nominated?

Individuals or teams who work in research or innovation.  This may be across a wide range of organisations including but not limited to, industry, the charitable sector, academia and the arts. Each medal or award has its own criteria which you can view on our website. How do I choose which medal or award is most appropriate?

The areas and disciplines recognised in the medal and awards categories have been designed to ensure there will be a medal / award suitable for all potential candidates.  Nominators may choose the medal or award they feel best represents the work of their nominee.  All nominations will be equitably and equally considered against the criteria of their chosen category.
    • The Impact awards are open to ALL, and each one specifies where it is for an individual or a team.
    • The Established Career medals are for mid-later career individuals; the regulations provide a definition to support this.
    • The Early Career medals are for those in their early career; the regulations provide a definition to support this, including clarification of how this applies to those who have taken career breaks etc.
How do I nominate?

Head to the ‘Medals and Awards’ page on our website and all the documentation required is linked there.  You will need to submit a short online nomination form.  To support this:
    1. send a link to the person being nominated for them to agree to their information being shared; and,
    2. ask one person to complete a reference.
Can I submit a nomination in Welsh?

Any element of this nomination can be completed in Welsh or English. Please complete the forms in the language of your choice.  A nomination may be submitted in either language and the supplementary forms (eg the Reference) can be in another.

Will the person being nominated be informed of their nomination?

Yes. In order to maintain transparency and ensure your nominee consents to their information being shared, we ask that they complete a short form to record this.  In addition, they will have the opportunity to complete a ‘Career Impact’ question, an optional question to highlight any factors that have influenced or affected their career that they wish the Medal and Awards Scrutiny Committee to take into account.

Who decides on the winner of each medal or award?

All nominations are considered by the Medals and Awards Scrutiny Committee convened for that purpose.  Membership of this committee will be published on our website once confirmed.  This committee will consider each nomination in turn, supported by an Independent Member to ensure consistency and equity of approach.  They will use a scoring matrix (available in our website documentation) to record their decisions and reach a conclusion.

What is the expectation on the winners?

All winners (and their nominators) will be informed shortly after the committees have met.  They will be invited to attend the Medals and Awards Ceremony which is usually held in Cardiff in the autumn.  Reasonable expenses will be offered to enable attendance at which the winners will be presented with their award or medal.

What do the winners receive?

Impact Award winners will receive a bespoke award.

Established Career Medal winners will receive a bespoke medal.

Early Career Medal winners will receive a bespoke medal and a cash prize.
