Study launch: Quic DNA Max Cancer of Unknown Primary (CUP)

15 Oct, 2026:

We are pleased to be supporting (through promotion) the launch of the Quic DNA Max Cancer of Unknown Primary (CUP) study. LSW Fellow Dr Sonali Dasgupta is Chief Investigator.

More about the study:

‘Cancer of Unknown Primary (CUP) is a heterogeneous and highly aggressive cancer, accounting for approximately 5% of all new cancer diagnoses and the sixth leading cause of cancer-related deaths.

Since 2023, Wales has been the first UK nation to offer tissue-based next-generation sequencing (NGS) for CUP as standard of care. However, real-world data demonstrate that only around 50% patients can access this test due to factors such as poor performance status, inaccessible metastatic sites, inadequate tissue quality and tissue exhaustion following extensive diagnostic investigations.

To address this unmet need, the QuicDNA Max-CUP study will introduce circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA) liquid biopsy into the diagnostic pathway ahead of tissue biopsy. This innovative Welsh initiative aims to deliver faster genomic results, support earlier treatment decisions and improve access to personalised cancer therapies.’

This educational meeting will bring together multidisciplinary stakeholders across Wales to raise awareness of the study protocol, eligibility criteria, operational pathways and professional responsibilities, ensuring successful and consistent implementation of QuicDNA Max-CUP across all seven Health Boards.

The launch event is taking place in Cardiff on the 15th of October. If you are interested in finding out more, please contact events@lsw.wales.ac.uk.
