Professor Tom Rippeth

Elected: 2025

Area(s): Science, Technology, Engineering, Medicine & Mathematics

Specialist Subject(s): Ocean Sciences

Professor of Physical Oceanography, Bangor University

Professor Rippeth is an observational oceanographer. His work has involved the development of new techniques for the measurement of aquatic turbulence, and the use of turbulence measurements to identify, unravel and quantify key physical processes which drive mixing in the ocean. Past process-based research has focused on, for example, the impact on melting Arctic sea-ice of mixing by the tide and wind. Professor Rippeth’s current research focus includes the potential environmental impacts of next generation floating wind farms in the Celtic Sea and North Sea.
