Professor Mayberry works on identifying the degree of cancer risk in ulcerative colitis, comparing it with the risk in Crohn’s disease. His research has resulted in the reduction of cancer risk in colitis to normal levels by the use of oral mesalazine. He has investigated the high risk of inflammatory bowel disease amongst South Asian migrants, with an even greater risk in their children. This has revealed the level of discrimination in delivery of care to migrants, such as limited access to expensive therapies. It has also led practitioners to gain greater exposure to new techniques as they go through their own learning process.
