Professor Rainald Lӧhner

Elected: 2025

Area(s): Science, Technology, Engineering, Medicine & Mathematics

Specialist Subject(s): Fluid Mechanics

Head of Center for Computational Fluid Dynamics and Distinguished Professor for Fluid Dynamics, George Mason University, Virginia, USA

Professor Lohner’s main research has been on the development and application of flow solvers based on unstructured grids. He has focused on every aspect of the simulation pipeline and, as a pioneer in this field, has a vast track record of publications, including a textbook on the subject. The methods and codes developed are used worldwide, including for the design and analysis of airplanes and drones; submarines, unmanned underwater vehicles and aircraft carriers; safety of embassies and consulates; and the targeting of bunkers and deeply buried high value targets. Hs work also elucidated the transmission mechanisms for pathogens in air, which had wide dissemination during the Covid-19 pandemic.
