Professor Thomas O’Loughlin

Elected: 2024

Area(s): Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences

Specialist Subject(s): Celtic Studies, History - Medieval, Theology

Professor Emeritus of Historical Theology, University of Nottingham

Professor O’Loughlin examines early and medieval texts, seeking to understand their religious world view. He explores those texts with the assumption that religion is always in flux within traditions, rather than being static or peripheral. He has worked to develop (within theology) an awareness of historical theology, and (within history) the history of theology. Fostering this interdisciplinary approach has been his major achievement, developed through teaching, writing, and editorial leadership. The Studia Traditionis Theologiae series, which he founded and directs, is devoted to this aim and there are now 53 volumes published and some 13 more in the press with Brepols.
