We are delighted to share the following opportunities for Fellows of the Learned Society of Wales. The Learned Society of Wales is seeking an expert in International Human Rights as representative on the UK and Ireland Academies Human Rights Committee (UKIHRC).

The LSW is a member of the UK and Ireland Academies Human Rights Committee (UKIHRC), along with the Royal Society, the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Academy of Medical Science, the British Academy, the Royal Irish Academy and the Royal Society of Edinburgh. The committee is currently chaired, and secretariat provided, by the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

The UKIHRC acts in support of academic freedom around the world through information-sharing, awareness-raising and advocacy, both in general and through responding to individual alerts issued by the International Human Rights Network of Academies and Scholarly Societies and Scholars at Risk, both of which identify incidents where researchers worldwide have been subjected to repression. The UKIHRC’s practice is to act in cases where there is evidence that the human rights of an individual researcher have been violated or denied because of their academic or scientific work. The Terms of Reference can be found here.

You will be one of two representatives from LSW’s fellowship on the committee, alongside one LSW staff member (Head of Public Policy).

  • Ad-hoc assessment of IHRN Alerts by email. Alerts arise on the basis of need: to give an idea of usual frequency, over the past six months we have received four such alerts.

Term of office: Commencing in Spring 2025 for a duration of three years.

Application process: If you would like to be considered for this opportunity, please contact Dr Haydeé Martínez-Zavala at clerk@lsw.wales.ac.uk by Monday 13 January 2025, 17:00.
