Election of new Fellows 2014 ¦ Ethol Cymrodyr Newydd 2014

The Learned Society of Wales is pleased to announce the results of its 2014 Election of new Fellows.  This election has strengthened the Society considerably, adding forty-three Fellows to its ranks.  Like the Founding Fellows and the Fellows elected in 2011, 2012 and 2013, the newly-elected Fellows represent a broad range of academic disciplines.  Most are based in Welsh universities but a number are based in other parts of the United Kingdom or overseas.

Sir John Cadogan, the Society’s President, said:

We have once again elected a further very strong cohort of new Fellows, to add to the existing list of excellent Founding Fellows and Fellows.  Over the coming years, our Fellowship will continue to grow by election judged by peer review.  To be elected will continue to be a target for our young scholars.

Election to Fellowship of the Learned Society of Wales is via nomination by existing Fellows.  It is open to men and women of all ages and from all ethnic groups:

  • who have a demonstrable record of excellence and achievement in any of the academic disciplines or who, being members of the professions, the arts, industry, commerce or public service, have made a distinguished contribution to the world of learning; and
  • who are resident in Wales, or who are persons of Welsh birth but are resident elsewhere, or who otherwise have a particular connection with Wales.

The 2014 Election is the fourth in a rolling process towards the building of a strong, representative Fellowship.  The Society’s continuing focus on excellence and achievement will ensure that its Fellowship will represent the very best of which Wales is capable in the major academic disciplines.

Mae’n bleser gan Gymdeithas Ddysgedig Cymru gyhoeddi canlyniad Etholiad 2014 am Gymrodyr newydd. Mae’r etholiad hwn wedi cryfhau’r Gymdeithas yn sylweddol, gan ychwanegu pedwar deg a thri o Gymrodyr i’w rhengoedd. Yn debyg i’r Cymrodyr Cychwynnol a’r Cymrodyr a etholwyd yn 2011, 2012 a 2013, mae’r Cymrodyr newydd yn cynrychioli ystod eang o ddisgyblaethau academaidd. Mae’r rhan fwyaf wedi’u lleoli mewn prifysgolion yng Nghymru ond mae nifer mewn rhannau eraill o’r Deyrnas Unedig neu dramor.

Dywedodd Syr John Cadogan, Llywydd y Gymdeithas:

Rydym unwaith eto wedi ethol cohort cryf o Gymrodyr newydd, i ychwanegu at y rhestr ragorol o Gymrodyr Cychwynnol a Chymrodyr. Dros y blynyddoedd nesaf, bydd ein Cymrodoriaeth yn parhau i dyfu drwy etholiad a fernir drwy adolygiad cymheiriaid. Bydd cael eu hethol yn parhau i fod yn darged i’n hysgolheigion ifanc.

Etholir i Gymrodoriaeth y Gymdeithas Ddysgedig drwy drefn o enwebiadau gan Gymrodyr cyfredol.  Mae ar agor i ddynion a menywod o bob oed ac o bob grŵp ethnig:

  • sydd â hanes clir o ragoriaeth a chyflawniad mewn unrhyw un o’r disgyblaethau academaidd, neu, a hwythau’n aelodau o’r proffesiynau, y celfyddydau, diwydiant, masnach neu wasanaethau cyhoeddus, sydd wedi gwneud cyfraniad arbennig i fyd dysg; ac
  • sydd yn preswylio yng Nghymru, neu sydd yn unigolion sydd wedi’u geni yng Nghymru ond sy‘n preswylio mewn man arall, neu sydd fel arall â chyswllt penodol â Chymru.

Etholiad 2014 yw’r pedwerydd mewn proses dreigl tuag at adeiladu Cymrodoriaeth gref, gynrychioliadol. Bydd y Gymdeithas yn parhau i ganolbwyntio ar ragoriaeth a chyflawniad ac felly’n sicrhau bod ei Chymrodoriaeth yn cynrychioli’r gorau o’r hyn y gall Cymru ei gyflawni yn y prif ddisgyblaethau academaidd.
