We warmly congratulate the following Fellows of the Society on their recent achievements:

 

• Professor Susan Mendus CBE FBA FLSW

Professor Mendus, a Morrell Professor Emerita of Political Philosophy at the University of York, and a former member of the Society’s Council, has been  recognised for her services to political science in the New Year Honours List, and appointed CBE. 

 

• Dr Lyn Evans CBE FInstP FLSW FRS

Dr Evans, along with six colleagues at CERN, has been awarded the special Fundamental Physics Prize in well-deserved recognition of his role in the discovery of the new Higgs Boson-like particle at the Large Hadron Collider.

 

• The Reverend Lord Leslie Griffiths

Invested by the Dominican Republic as a Member of the Order of Christopher Columbus for ‘eminent contribution to humanity and the improvement in understanding between the peoples of the “Americas”’, in recognition of his work, both scholarly and practical, for the peoples of Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

 

• Professor Jonathan Shepherd CBE FMedSci FLSW:

Professor Shepherd has been elected to the Council of the Academy of Medical Sciences (2012-15).

Professor Shepherd has also been shortlisted for the Times Higher Education Research Project of Year award for his and his team’s pioneering research in to into violence, alcohol and late-night safety. A  key output of the group’s research has been the development of the Cardiff Model for Violence Prevention which uses information gathered in Accident and Emergency departments to both measure violence and drive violence prevention activity.

 

•  Professor W.John Morgan DSc FRAI FRSA FLSW

Professor Morgan, Chair of the United Kingdom National Commission for UNESCO, has been appointed a member of the UNESCO Director General’s International Experts Panel on Rethinking Education in a Changing World.

 

• Professor Mike Owen FRCPsych FMedSci FLSW

Professor Owen of Cardiff University’s MRC Centre for Neuropsychiatric Genetics and Genomics has been awarded The Lieber Prize in recognition of his outstanding work into the causes prevention and treatment of Schizophrenia.
