Join the new Medals and Awards Scrutiny Committees

LSW Medals and Awards

In March 2026, we will be launching a brand new suite of Learned Society Medals and Awards.

12 medals/awards (of which 6 will be awarded on alternate years) will be launched on the 1st March.  Anyone may nominate someone they feel fits the criteria for each award or medal and we encourage a wide range of nominations.  There is no requirement to be a Fellow or in any way associated with the Society to either nominate or be nominated.

Our medals and awards are designed to celebrate researchers and practitioners, who work, both individually and as teams, in academia, industry and the arts and whose work positively impacts on the advancement of knowledge and/or the power of research and innovation.

Medals and Awards Scrutiny Committees

As we plan the launch of our new suite of medals and awards in March, we are seeking Expressions of Interest from Fellows to join the new Scrutiny Committees.

The deadline for Expressions of Interest is Monday 9th February 23:59. You can submit an expression of interest via this online form.

These positions can be undertaken entirely online, making them accessible to all Fellows, regardless of location. We encourage all Fellows, including those elected in 2025 and outside Wales, to consider expressing their interest. Please note that Fellows who are on LSW Council and General Purposes Committee are not eligible to sit on the Medals and Awards Scrutiny Committee.

The role will involve reviewing nominations received and attending one online Medals and Awards Scrutiny Committee meeting to be arranged with members attending– usually in June/July. The Role Profile can be found here.

The new process has an increased number of medals and awards with a broader range of skills and knowledge being celebrated. As such, each Scrutiny Committee will be made up of Fellows who represent a broad range of discipline backgrounds, alongside additional members as detailed in the Guidance.

Fellow vacancies are available in each of the following categories:

  • Impact Awards (4 vacancies)
  • Established Career Medals (4 vacancies)
  • The Dillwyn Medals are to be continued and as such, do not require new members this year.  Vacancies will be advertised from 2027 onwards.

Equity, Diversity & Inclusion:

The Society is enriched by the different backgrounds and perspectives of our Fellows, and we are keen to receive a diverse range of applications. Members of each Medals and Awards Scrutiny Committee will be selected to represent the range of disciplines represented by our medals.  Consideration will also be given to ensure we have a gender balance and a strong demographic diversity across all individuals in each committee.
