Information for the 2022 Fellows

Welcome Meeting

On Wednesday 11 May, 12:30-13:30, we are holding a Zoom Welcome Meeting for new Fellows. This is an opportunity for you to find out more about the Society, and to meet our staff and officers. If you would like to attend, please contact the Fellowship Officer, Fiona Gaskell, who will send you the Zoom link.

AGM

We hope you will be able to attend our Annual General Meeting which will be held on Zoom on Wednesday 25 May at 14:30, when you will be formally welcomed to the Fellowship. If you would like to attend, please contact Fiona Gaskell

Regional In-Person Events – Fellows’ Receptions

We are in the process of organising a series of summer events – regional in-person events for Fellows – to be held in Wales. These will be our first in person events since 2019 and we will be giving all Fellows elected since then the opportunity to be welcomed in person by the President and to sign the roll. These events are not restricted to Fellows resident in Wales and we look forward to meeting you in person.

An Opportunity to Contribute to the Society

In 2021 the Society appointed an external consultant to review “How welcoming and inclusive is the Learned Society of Wales?” In response the Society will be establishing a working group to consider the findings of the report. The President has reserved a place on the working group for one of our newly elected Fellows and invite you to consider working with us if you have experience or a keen interest in EDI.

If you would like to learn more about the work we are doing and are interested in working with us, please contact Amanda Kirk who will be happy to give you further details. The deadline for expressions of interest in joining the working group will be 12 May 2022.

Fees

New Fellows are required to pay an admission fee of £80. There is also an annual subscription fee of £160 (£80 for those aged over 70 on 25 May 2022). Those aged over 85 are exempt from admission and subscription fees. We will contact you separately about these fees (invoices are normally sent in the autumn). Subscription fees are an important element of our budget; the Society is very grateful to all Fellows for their support.

We want to ensure that our admission and membership fees are never a barrier to Fellowship. We operate a Fee Relief Policy for Fellows whose circumstances make it difficult to cover the fees.

Fellows are also encouraged to sign up for Gift Aid by completing this simple form: https://www.learnedsociety.wales/support-us-gift-aid/. As we are a registered charity, this makes subscription payments worth an extra 25% to the Society.   Some fellows also choose to make regular or occasional additional donations to support our work.

Website Profile and Data Update

We now need more information from you including a postal address (to allow us to send your Fellowship certificate) and your date of birth (so that we can ensure that we invoice you appropriately for fees. We also like to record your preferred language of communication – English or Welsh. Fiona Gaskell will send you a statement of what information we currently hold about you (e.g. Job Title), and we would like you to amend or add information as appropriate.

You will be added to our website: https://www.learnedsociety.wales/our-fellows/fellows/  Could you also please send Fiona Gaskell a photograph suitable for publishing online for your profile? 150dpi resolution is preferable.
