Invitation to submit nominations for election to Council

The Society’s Regulations provide that the initial terms of office of the members of the Council should not exceed three years which term shall be renewable for one further term.

The terms of office of three of the eighteen members of Council will end at the close of the Annual General Meeting which will be held on 22 May 2019.

These are:

  • Professor Nancy Edwards
  • Professor Terry Threadgold
  • Professor Christine James

Professor Terry Threadgold is eligible for re-election and has already indicated her willingness to stand for re-election. Professor Threadgold has attended 10 out of a possible 13 meetings since her election in 2016.

When considering possible nominees, Fellows are reminded that ALL FELLOWS are eligible for nomination, regardless of gender, location or the subject area under which they were elected. You may wish, however, to note the following:

  • The Society is committed to equal opportunities and aims to achieve a balance of membership of the Council in terms of gender (currently, the Council consists of 5 women and 13 men) and geographical spread, as well as ethnicity, broad subject area and skills.
  • The Regulations provide that, in order to ensure a representative balance of expertise on the Council, no more than two-thirds of the members of Council shall ordinarily be from either one of the two broad subject categories of which the Society is comprised (on the one hand, Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine; and, on the other, the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences). The remaining third can include Fellows elected under the general category
  • The out-going post holders all fall into category Arts, Humanities and Social Science. (However, all three vacancies are eligible to be filled by candidates from any of the three Fellowship categories.)

Fellows are advised that the Council ordinarily meets on four or five occasions each year.

The Society is a Royal Charter charity and, as such, the members of the Council are required to fulfill the roles, duties and responsibilities of Charity Trustees.

Gwahoddiad i gyflwyno enwebiadau ar gyfer etholiad i’r Cyngor

Mae Rheoliadau’r Gymdeithas yn darparu na ddylai tymor cychwynnol aelodau o’r Cyngor yn eu swydd fod yn hirach na thair blynedd, ac y gellir adnewyddu’r cyfryw dymor am un tymor pellach.

Bydd cyfnod tri o ddeunaw aelod y Cyngor yn eu swydd yn dod i ben ar ddiwedd y Cyfarfod Cyffredinol Blynyddol a gynhelir ar 22 Mai 2019.  Y rhain yw:

  • Yr Athro Nancy Edwards
  • Yr Athro Terry Threadgold
  • Yr Athro Christine James

Mae’r Athro Terry Threadgold yn gymwys i’w hailethol ac eisoes wedi nodi ei pharodrwydd i sefyll ail etholiad. Mae’r Athro Threadgold wedi mynychu 10 cyfarfod o 13 cyfarfod posibl ers cael ei hethol 2016.

Wrth ystyried enwebiadau posibl, atgoffir Cymrodyr bod YR HOLL GYMRODYR yn gymwys i’w henwebu, beth bynnag eu rhywedd, lleoliad neu’r maes pwnc y’i hetholwyd ar ei gyfer. Serch hynny efallai yr hoffech nodi’r canlynol:

  • Mae’r Gymdeithas yn ymrwymo i gyfle cyfartal ac yn anelu at gyflawni cydbwysedd ymhlith aelodau’r Cyngor o ran rhywedd (ar hyn o bryd mae’r Cyngor yn cynnwys 5 menyw a 13 dyn) a thaeniad daearyddol, yn ogystal ag ethnigrwydd, meysydd pwnc bras a sgiliau.
  • Er mwyn sicrhau cydbwysedd cynrychioliadol o arbenigedd ar y Cyngor mae’r Rheoliadau’n darparu na ddylai dros ddwy ran o dair o aelodau’r Cyngor fel arfer ddod o’r naill neu’r llall o’r ddau gategori pwnc bras y mae’r Gymdeithas yn eu cynnwys (ar y naill law y Gwyddorau, Technoleg, Peirianneg, Meddygaeth a Mathemateg; ac ar y llall y Celfyddydau, y Dyniaethau a’r Gwyddorau Cymdeithasol). Gall y traean sy’n weddill gynnwys Cymrodyr a etholwyd yn y categori cyffredinol.
  • Mae’r deiliaid swydd sy’n gadael yn perthyn i gategori’r Celfyddydau, y Dyniaethau a’r Gwyddorau Cymdeithasol. (Fodd bynnag mae’r tair swydd wag yn gymwys i’w llenwi gan ymgeiswyr o unrhyw un o dri chategori’r Gymrodoriaeth).
